Federal Highway Administration Spends $4 Million in Stimulus Funds to Build a Bike Trail to Taco Bell

  • The federal Highway Administration has allocated $4 million in federal stimulus dollars to build a 2.66 mile bike trail in Massachusetts. The planned corridor will provide a new path connecting the Manhan Bike Trail to the Northampton and Norwottuck Trails. Once the new trail is completed, the Manhan bikers will finally have access to the Taco Bell in Northampton.

  • Since 1991, Congress has allotted money to State governments in order to increase biking, walking, and mass transit. During that time, Massachusetts has used only 37% of the $135 million in funding Congress has allocated for the state, leaving approximately $80 million unspent. Rather than tapping that unspent federal money, Massachusetts will instead utilize an extra $4 million, thanks to the largess of the federal Highway Administration.

  • Under the House Republican Stimulus Alternative, taxpayer funds would not be spent on a bike trail leading to a local Taco Bell. Instead, Republicans would have created twice as many jobs at half the cost. To learn how visit: http://republicanwhip.house.gov/Jobs/
