“I think going forward what the Republican Party is focused on right now is the disconnect between what the Obama administration and Speaker Pelosi are promoting here in Washington, and the reality on the ground for working families and small businesses. We're spending money at a clip faster than we've ever spent before, amassing debt more than we ever have before, while people across this country are out of a job. We just saw the jobless numbers. They continue to go up. Why aren't we focusing on trying to do something about this economy? Instead, priority one for Nancy Pelosi this week is imposing a huge national energy tax. There’s just a huge disconnect.” – House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA)

Cantor On The Cost And Consequences Of The Democrats’ Agenda And National Energy Tax (Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” 6/25/09):

Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade: “Congressman, Karl Rove wrote a column today saying that America seems to like President Obama but his policies increasingly, they seem to be against them according to recent polls. Are you getting that sense?”

Rep. Cantor: “I don't think there’s any question. I think you see on the vote that will be this week in the House on the national energy tax, Nancy Pelosi’s having a tough time getting the votes for that bill. And simply because I think the American people are waking up to the cost and consequences of the Democrats’ agenda. They’re spending money that we don't have. They’re not focusing on the priority which should be job creation right now. And frankly, this has been the case since the beginning of the year. We started with the stimulus debate saying that Republicans had a plan that would create twice as many jobs at half the cost and we’ve got to be mindful of the impact on people.”

Cantor On The Democrat Disconnect (MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” 6/25/09):

Rep. Cantor: “I think going forward what the Republican Party is focused on right now is the disconnect between what the Obama administration and Speaker Pelosi are promoting here in Washington, and the reality on the ground for working families and small businesses. There’s just a huge disconnect. I think as you see going forward to the 2010 elections and 2012, a Republican Party that will be about trying to advocate our solutions to try and address the real concerns of the American people.”

Cantor On The Democrats’ Drive For Government-Run Health Care (Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” 6/25/09):

Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade: “What's your take on the Obama show from the White House?”

Rep. Cantor: “Listen, I mean, the President has said a lot about health care and maintains it’s his number one domestic priority. And clearly, we’ve got to do something to bring about health care reform because we won't have the system that we're used to in this country if we don't do that. But, what is so frightening about what's coming out of the White House right now is first of all the President is spending money that we don't have. And, if we're not careful, we will end up, if we follow his government-centered plan, creating a situation in which people don't have access to the doctors they want, won't have the kind of choices of treatment that they want, and, long-term, the consequences are going to be you will see tens of millions of people come off of the insurance plans that they like and won't be able to have it.”

Cantor On The “Speed Bumps” With The Democrats’ Government-Run Health Care Plan (C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal,” 6/25/09):

C-SPAN’s Steve Scully: “So Eric Cantor, a Congressman from Virginia, let me ask you generally where is this legislation?”

Rep. Cantor: “Obviously it has hit a few speed bumps over the last couple of weeks. When we see the real cost of the legislation beginning to come out, with the Congressional Budget Office saying on the one hand that the Senate Finance bill costing $1.6 trillion and I’m hearing estimates of a House bill of over $3 trillion, it brings into the question this whole notion that we’re going to be bringing down health care costs. If you’re looking at spending that kind of money, it is clearly money that we don't have. The main concern I think that most Americans have about the notion of a government health care plan is that they won't have the ability to choose their doctor, they won' t have the ability for their doctor to prescribe a certain procedure because it will all be dictated by Washington. Long-term, the consequences are pretty evident that there will be tens of millions of people coming off of the plans that they have now that they like and having to go on to a government plan, which is exactly the opposite of what the President begins every one of his statements about, that is, if you like what you have you can keep it. That’s just not the case if you create a government plan.”
